Czech start-ups World from Space, MapTiler, Stratosyst and TFI Systems triumphed in the international Copernicus Masters and Galileo Masters competitions. The firms received their awards on Tuesday, 4 December 2018, in Marseilles, which became the centre of events of EU Space Week in the first week of December.

Copernicus Masters, in which World From Space and MapTiler succeeded, recognises innovative ideas using Earth observation data (photographs of Earth from satellites). CzechInvest is assisting the development of both firms at the ESA BIC Prague space incubator. Stratosyst and TFI Systems were winners in the Galileo Masters competition, which is focused on innovative ideas using satellite navigation.

Everyone who works with Earth observation data or satellite data can enter the respective competitions. Participants may be firms and projects in the idea phase or even students. Winners are selected according to several criteria – innovativeness, overall benefit and technological and commercial aspects. A mere technological solution does not suffice, however, as the company or product must have the requisites to succeed on the market and to find customers.
