“STV Glass, which was renamed to SCHOTT CR recently, began production of glass components for CRT displays in 1994,“ says Jörg Hurtz, Chairman of the Board at SCHOTT CR, adding: “The shift in consumer demand from CRT to flat panel televisions has lead to a steady decline in worldwide sales of CRT televisions, forcing us to close our CRT production. Because of the good experiences in Czech Republic, the existing infrastructure of the location and the well trained employees SCHOTT decided to implement a completely new production of glass tubes for LCD television and computer-monitor backlights in Valasske Mezirici.”
The modification of an existing building is now almost finished so that it will meet future conditions. SCHOTT CR is thus committed to the long tradition of the glass industry in Valasske Mezirici. Innovative production will get under way this year at the beginning of August, when the first production unit starts production, followed by another eight glass melting tanks in the following months. All production will be intended for export.
“SCHOTT CR is implementing a unique production program, which the competition in Europe does not have. Only one other subsidiary of SCHOTT located in Mitterteich, Germany, produces the same range of products in Europe,” says Tomas Hruda, CEO of CzechInvest.
Tubes for technological and medical use are a traditional area of production within the SCHOTT group.
