As in most Czech cities, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic was also celebrated abroad. The purpose of the celebrations in London was not only to commemorate the nation’s centennial, but also to present the best and most advanced developments from today’s Czech Republic. This involved an exhibition of Czech glass, lighting and design on Monday, 22 October, a presentation of Czech nanotechnologies on Tuesday, 23 October, a concert of the Czech Philharmonic on Wednesday, 24 October, and an exhibition of the Czech medical devices sector and cardiology on Thursday, 25 October.

The economic diplomacy project Czech Nano Day took place on Tuesday, 23 October 2018, and presented ground-breaking technologies from twelve Czech nanotechnology firms (PARDAM, Magna Energy Storage, HE3DA, TESCAN, ING MEDICAL, CONTIPRO, NANOSPACE, Lada Vyvialova, ACO MARINE, ADVANCED MATERIALS JTJ, RETAP, FILTREX). Those attending the event thus had an opportunity to taste filtered water from the murky River Thames, marvel at freshly produced nanofibers floating in the air and learn about a new nano-coating that beautifies the garden wall of the embassy while cleaning the emissions of passing cars. The event was attended by an extraordinary guest, British Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark, who confirmed the exceptionally good name of Czech nanotechnologies in the world and Great Britain’s interest in continuing cooperation with Czech scientists and firms. Nano Day was organised by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London in cooperation with the CzechInvest’s London office, the Czech Nanotechnology Industries Association and the Nanoprogress cluster organisation.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš visited London on Wednesday, 24 October 2018. Babiš met with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Mayor of the City of London Charles Bowman and Czech citizens living in Great Britain. He also paid his respects to Czech and Slovaks who died in the Battle of Britain and, with his wife, attended a celebratory concert of the Czech Philharmonic at the Royal Academy of Music.

Czech Medical Devices Day, an exhibition of firms operating in the medical devices sector, took place on Thursday, 25 October 2018. A total of eleven firms and institutions (Advanced Medical Solutions, CLINITEX, ELLA-CS, Grade Medical, Intergaze, International Clinical Research Centre of St. Anne’s University Hospital in Brno, MediaTrade, Medin, MZ Liberec, Prospon, Riocath) presented themselves to the audience by means of a moderated panel discussion. CzechInvest was a co-organiser of the event, which was also supported by the economic diplomacy project. Czech Medical Devices Day was attended by Czech Deputy Minister of Health Radek Policar and Nikki Patel, a representative of NHS England, who spoke about the future needs of the British healthcare system in the area of digitalisation.
