Startup as a gateway to progress. Europe fighting its way to the top

European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel again held talks with chief representatives of individual startup ecosystems. The conference was attended by 27 leading organisations, whose representatives presented the reality of the current situation in the sector to the European Union’s representatives for innovation, research, culture, education and youth.

Through videoconferencing, the commissioner had the opportunity to become more familiar with the mechanisms at work in newly established and growing companies across Europe and with a list of additional recommended steps. Leading experts in the startup sector shared the results achieved to date and spoke about the actual needs of the entire ecosystem.
The proposed steps involve:

  • Europe’s startup score
  • free access to open data
  • business training
  • support for women – female entrepreneurs
  • secured innovation opportunities

The conference was not the first opportunity for representatives of startups to meet with the European Commission. The path to joint dialogue leads through the Startup Europe project, which is sponsored by the Commission and whose priority is a single digital market. The establishment of such a market is a response to the European Commission’s intention to make Europe an innovation superpower and a leader in this area. Startup Europe comprises a community of ambassadors of key institutions of European startup ecosystems, which supports the growth of the Startup Europe initiative “from the ground up”. The Czech Republic is represented in this community by Markéta Přenosilová, head of CzechInvest’s Startup and Innovative SME Division.
