BMW Group signs contract on construction of test centre in the Sokolov area

On Thursday, 25 January 2018, representatives of the BMW Group, the Karlovy Vary region and the company Sokolovská uhelná signed a contract on construction of BMW’s test centre. Those signing the document were governor of the Karlovy Vary region Jana Vildumetzová, BMW Group representatives Johannes Maierhofer and Katharina Will, and Jiří Pöpperl, chairman of the board of directors of Sokolovská uhelná.

CzechInvest helped bring the BMW Group’s investment to the Czech Republic. On the Czech side alone, more than 200 people from various departments and institutions at the national and regional levels were involved in the negotiations conducted over a period of two and a half years. BMW Group’s test centre is an outstanding example of the investments with higher value added on which the Czech Republic is focused.

The test centre will be located on an approximately 500 ha site near the city of Sokolov in the Karlovy Vary region. The BMW Group anticipates that the facility will be put into operation at the beginning of the next decade.

Several hundred people will find work at the planned test centre, where the BMW Group will, for example, continue development in the areas of electromobility, digitalisation, autonomous driving and assistance systems. The total investment will be in the range of hundreds of millions of euros. The centre will be the company’s first development facility in Eastern Europe.
